Lesson:

Description
Spanish explorer Juan Diaz de Solis landed here in 1516, and most of his party were immediately killed by indigenous Indians.
Uruguay took many more years to conquer but the Spanish were not deterred.
Then in the early 1800s, led by Jose Gervasio Artigas, a military officer, the struggle for political freedom began, and it ended with the Declaration of Independence in 1825 and the creation of the State of Uruguay in 1828.
Compared to neighbors ( Argentina and Brazil ), it's a small country of rolling plains and low hills, but for those that visit the engaging capital city of Montevideo, and the world-class beaches, they consider Uruguay a most desirable vacation spot.
Here are some facts and figures on Úruguay:
- Uruguay's population is only about 3.2 million.
- Uruguay is a world leader in the production of wool and cattle.
- During the summer, Úruguayans like to visit the country's beautiful
beaches.
- Uruguay was the first South American country to give women the right
to vote!
- Uruguay's federal government has a president, a vice president, and
a bicameral legislature -- a very similar structure to our federal system.

The freshness of the breeze caressing one's face added to the spectacular beauty of the [Śruguayan] countryside is, without a doubt, a pleasure that you cannot pass up. The city [Montevideo, the capital] vibrates and lives, tranquil and amiable like all of Uruguay. Where color and happiness dominate life, where our people enjoy cultural, the artistic, and sports events. In March, Punta del Este [Uruguay's largest port] is converted into a port of fishermen, where the sailors reign.
